Repair of stone chips

A small stone chip can cause a crack in the windscreen, especially when driving on uneven surfaces or in freezing weather conditions. And this crack can quickly become bigger. At this point, continuing to drive for any significant amount of time is no longer an option.

We repair damage from stone chips reliably and free of charge* before it can lead to a bigger problem. By injecting a special synthetic resin in the damaged area, various stone chips can be repaired to the point that they are virtually invisible. Our experts verify in advance whether this method is possible for every instance of stone chip damage. This saves time and money – and ensures a clear field of vision.

(* In the case of comprehensive insurance, most insurance providers will cover the cost of the repairs without requiring the policy holder to pay an excess – depending on the tariff and the agreed excess.)

By the way: An unrepaired stone chip can cause the vehicle to fail the next technical inspection (Contrôle technique).

If a windshield replacement is necessary, we use only genuine, perfectly fitting original parts from Audi, VW, VW Commercial Vehicles, SEAT, CUPRA, or Škoda. This ensures the highest quality and a perfect fit.

What can be repaired

A repair is possible if the damaged area is neither in the driver’s field of vision (blue) or on the edge area of the windscreen. The diameter must not be larger than 5 mm (point of impact) or 40 mm (area of breakage). This is because the repaired area cannot be made fully invisible even in the event of a successful repair.

When does the windscreen need to be replaced?

A windscreen replacement is recommended when the stone chip is the third time a windscreen has been damaged or when a crack or fracture has formed. The process of replacing the windscreen usually takes one day. We recommend leaving the vehicle in our workshop overnight, so that the windscreen can be left to harden in ideal conditions. This is important to ensure that the windscreen and the vehicle body work together properly, e.g. that airbags can be triggered properly.

Advantages

* For safety reasons, as well as other reasons, no repairs can be carried out in the primary field of vision of the driver and in the area around the edge of the windscreen. The damage must not be larger than 5 mm (point of impact) and 40 mm (point of breakage). Even in the best-case scenario, the repair is not completely invisible. In the case of comprehensive insurance, most insurance providers will cover the cost of the repairs without requiring the policy holder to pay an excess. In other cases, we are happy to provide an individual quotation.

  • The repair is almost always free of charge. The insurance provider covers the costs with requiring the policy holder to pay an excess – depending on the tariff and the agreed excess.
  • The repair guarantees full structural integrity of the windscreen and makes it look almost brand-new – including tinted windscreens.
  • Because the windscreen has been kept, no calibration of the sensors for assistance systems is necessary.
  • After the repair, there are almost no visible signs that a repair has been carried out.
  • The vignette does not need to be replaced.

FAQ

Does a stone chip always result in a crack?

Not necessarily. However, there is a risk that tension and stress in the windscreen can cause the chip to turn into a crack, such as sudden changes in weather with large temperature changes, heating during winter, bumps or potholes.

Which level of car insurance covers glass damage?

Third party insurance (legal minimum requirement) generally does not cover glass damage, but comprehensive insurance does. Comprehensive insurance generally covers the full costs of a repair, and in the event of a replacement, depending on the tariff, the policy holder only needs to pay the excess percentage. *

What happens with the environmental badge when the windscreen is replaced?

The environmental badge is simply replaced.

What happens with the toll vignette when the windscreen is replaced?

Valid toll vignettes are carefully removed from the old windscreen. In most countries, all that is needed to get a new vignette is to show the old vignette along with the receipt.

What do I do in the event of damage to the window glass of my soft top roof?

We can repair small damages to the window of the soft top roof of a convertible using special resin. If a replacement cannot be avoided, the window must be stitched in by a saddlery. We are happy to co-ordinate with the saddlery in such cases.
